If you are working your first job, your paycheque is the first thing you should learn to read — and the number it starts from is the general minimum wage in your province.
Canada does not have one minimum wage. It has fourteen: one for each province and territory, plus a federal rate for federally regulated industries like banks, airlines, telecom and interprovincial trucking. Most of them now move automatically every year with inflation, which is why the number your older sibling quoted you two years ago is almost certainly wrong.
Here is where every jurisdiction stands as of September 2026, and what changes on October 1.
General minimum wage by province and territory
| Province / Territory | General minimum wage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nunavut | $19.75 | Highest in Canada; adjusted each September |
| Yukon | $18.51 | Effective April 1, 2026 |
| British Columbia | $18.25 | Increased June 1, 2026 |
| Ontario | $17.60, rising to $17.95 on October 1, 2026 | Annual CPI adjustment |
| Prince Edward Island | $17.00 | Adjusts twice a year |
| Northwest Territories | $16.95 | Reviewed each September |
| Nova Scotia | $16.75, rising to $17.00 on October 1, 2026 | Adjusts twice a year |
| Québec | $16.60 | Effective May 1, 2026 |
| Newfoundland and Labrador | $16.35 | Effective April 1, 2026 |
| Manitoba | $16.00, rising to $16.40 on October 1, 2026 | Annual CPI adjustment |
| New Brunswick | $15.90 | Effective April 1, 2026 |
| Saskatchewan | $15.35 | Adjustment expected October 1, 2026 |
| Alberta | $15.00 | Unchanged since 2018 |
| Federally regulated | $18.15 | Effective April 1, 2026, CPI-indexed |
Two things jump out of that table if you are young and job hunting.
We keep this table current on the Canadian Minimum Wage Tracker, which also lists every increase already scheduled and is free for anyone to embed.
The first is the spread. A cashier shift in Iqaluit is worth $4.75 an hour more than the identical shift in Calgary. Over a 20-hour student work week, that is roughly $95 — about $380 a month for the same work.
The second is Alberta. Its general minimum wage has not moved since October 2018. Alberta also applies a $13.00 job creation student wage to some workers under 18 — the lowest youth rate in the country. If you are an Alberta student, check which rate your employer is applying and how many hours it applies to.
The rates that are not the general rate
The headline number is not always your number. Watch for these:
- Liquor servers. Ontario and British Columbia both eliminated their separate lower server wage. If you are pouring drinks in either province, you are owed the full general rate before tips.
- Students under 18. Several provinces set a lower rate for students under 18 working limited hours while school is in session. Ontario’s student rate is $16.90 from October 1, 2026, for under-18s working 28 hours a week or less during the school year, or during school breaks. Alberta’s job creation student wage is $13.00 on similar terms.
- Homeworkers and piece rates. If you are paid per item, per delivery or per task, your total pay divided by hours worked still has to clear minimum wage. Gig and delivery work is where this most often goes wrong.
- Training or probation wages. These do not exist. No province allows an employer to pay you below minimum wage because you are “still learning.”
How to check you are actually being paid it
Most underpayment is not dramatic. It is small, quiet and adds up.
Read your pay stub every single time. It must show your hourly rate, hours worked, gross pay, each deduction and net pay. If your employer will not give you a stub, that is a violation on its own.
Do the division. Take your gross pay, subtract tips, and divide by the hours you actually worked. If the result is below the table above, something is wrong.
Count the unpaid edges. Time spent setting up before your shift, cashing out after close, mandatory training, or staying late to finish a task is working time and must be paid. A common pattern is a schedule that says 5:00 to 9:00 but a manager who expects you at 4:45.
Tips are on top. Your employer cannot count your tips toward minimum wage anywhere in Canada. Tip pooling with other staff is generally legal; a manager or owner taking a share of the tip pool usually is not.
If the math does not work, start by raising it with your manager in writing — a short, polite text or email creates a record. If nothing changes, every province has an employment standards branch that takes anonymous complaints and can order back pay. You do not need a lawyer and you do not pay a fee.
Minimum wage is a floor, not a ceiling
The most useful thing to know about minimum wage is that a surprising share of entry-level jobs pay above it, and almost none of them advertise that fact clearly. Warehouse, security, trades helper, childcare and call centre roles frequently start a dollar or two higher than retail and food service for work that is no harder to get with no experience.
That gap is worth real money over a school year, and it is the single easiest raise a young worker can give themselves — not by negotiating, but by applying somewhere else.
Browse entry-level jobs on Youth Workforce to compare what employers in your city are actually posting. Every listing on the board is open to candidates with five years of experience or less, so you are not competing against people a decade into their careers for a starter role.
